Posing Tips For Beginners

Hey y’all! I haven’t done a blog post in a hot minute, but being quarantined has given me much more time to focus on my blog. I’m not a big writer, but I did want to make this post for bloggers, especially for the ones who are still starting out. I have some clients tell me that they aren’t used to being in front of the camera and I always tell them not to worry, because I’m there to help guide them during the session. I know being in front of the camera can be intimidating and scary sometimes, but I’m hoping this guide will help show you a good place to start when posing in front of the camera and getting the most out of your session.

P.S., since this is during quarantine at my apartment complex and I didn’t have a model or blogger to do this with, I had no choice but to be the model! Haha! I think it’s a good thing, because I get a taste of what’s it’s like being on the other side of the camera and it helps me understand what can go through the mind of the subject, especially with a ton of factors, like the wind, hair, the bright sun which made it hard to keep my eyes open. Lol.

1. Invisible Heels

I tend to do this with my feet about 98% of the time when posing for the camera, and I tell my clients the same, especially if they’re wearing flats. It instantly elevates you if you want to look taller and makes your legs look longer. Who doesn’t want that?

2. Hiding The Bulge

Sometimes, we can be having an off-week and feel more conscious about our bodies than normal. That’s why I love this little trick! If you’re shooting from the side and happen to be wearing a tight dress or leggings, just bend your elbow and place your hand by your hip, covering it perfectly.

3. Good Posture

I used to hate the way I looked in pictures until I found out that just correcting my posture changed everything in my photos! I sometimes will tend to remind my clients while shooting to PUT THEIR SHOULDERS BACK. Trust me, it makes a big difference! (FYI, I know I’m overdoing it in the first picture, but you get the point, lol!)

4. “Touch your hair”

This is one of my go-to poses that I tell clients to do when they’re starting out. It’s the easiest thing to start with and looks cute every time, but there is a right way to do it. We can sometimes grab only a piece and it doesn’t look right, but I always suggest placing your hair behind your hair and fluffing it up a bit and voila! It looks like you instantly just gave it more volume!

5. Bend What You Can

Another tip you will hear me tell some of my clients: BEND WHATEVER YOU CAN BEND. Your body will always look a lot more flattering and it also can give you curves than just standing completely straight for a photo. It adds way more interest to your photos too.

6. Walking

I love to do walking shots. It may seem intimidating at first and awkward, but the movement helps to make the photo look less posed and more candid, which is usually what bloggers are going for. So it’s good to incorporate some walking poses for that effortless vibe.

I could keep going with more tips, but I feel these are good general ones to follow. I really hope this little posing guide helped and has given you more confidence to try them out during your next session!
